Revolutionary Road

Revolutionary Road

Tour Overview

“Revolutionary Road” is a five-day tour through the unforgettable landscape and history of the Texas Revolution, with Dr. Andrew Torget as your personal guide. Beginning in historic San Antonio, we trace the Revolution from its earliest roots in colonial Mexico, to the historic “Come and Take It” fight at Gonzales, to the epic battles for San Antonio and the siege of the Alamo. Then we follow both Santa Anna’s and Sam Houston’s armies into the heartbreaking massacre at Goliad, the burning of Texas settlements, and the panicked flight of Texas civilians that followed, before culminating in the miraculous victory at San Jacinto that remade both Texas and the continent of North America. Along the way, we stay in elegant hotels, enjoy delicious food, hear amazing lectures, travel in the comfort of a chartered bus, and enjoy private tours of both world-famous sites and historic places that no one else gets to see.

We begin our adventure by traveling together from Denton to our beautiful hotel on the iconic riverwalk in downtown San Antonio. Along the way, Dr. Torget will entertain us with stories and tales of early Texas, setting the larger context for the emergence of early Mexico, the arrival of American colonists under Stephen F. Austin, and the remarkable circumstances that led to the outbreak of fighting and revolution in 1835-36. During the afternoon we'll enjoy a private lunch in Seguin on our way to the hamlet of Gonzales, the site of the first fighting of the Texas Revolution, where we'll tour the battle sites, see the world-famous "Come and Take It" cannon, and examine the outbreak of the war in October 1835. Following another private lunch, we will spend the afternoon immersing ourselves in the coming, fighting, and aftermath of the Battle of the Alamo (a World Heritage Site). Dr. Torget will lead us with an in-depth lecture over the entire battle (and the desperate final fight on March 6, 1836), followed by a personal tour of the battleground itself and admission to newly unveiled Alamo exhibits. In the morning, we will travel to Goliad for a personal tour of Presidio La Bahia, the site of the infamous Goliad Massacre, where James Fannin and 400 Texas soldiers were captured in the Battle of Coleto Creek and executed on the orders of Santa Anna. Following a BBQ lunch, we will travel to San Felipe de Austin, the capital of Stephen F. Austin's American colony, and explore the "Runaway Scrape" that drove thousands of Texans to abandon their homes in a desperate bid to escape Santa Anna's oncoming armies. At San Felipe, we will take a private tour of the recently reconstructed historic village, have after-hours access to the site's state-of-the-art museum exhibits, and enjoy a private catered dinner on-site.
